چکیده
In a randomized, head-to-head, placebo-controlled trial, we enrolled adults with obesity (body-mass index [the weight in kilograms divided by the square of height meters], 32 to 43) who did not have diabetes. After an 8-week low-calorie diet, participants were randomly assigned for 1 year one four strategies: moderate-to-vigorous–intensity exercise program plus placebo (exercise group); treatment liraglutide (3.0 mg per day) usual activity (liraglutide therapy (combination or (placebo group). End points prespecified hypotheses change body (primary end point) and body-fat percentage (secondary from randomization period intention-to-treat population. Prespecified metabolic health-related safety also assessed.

Weight loss, exercise, or both and physical function in obese older adults.
BACKGROUND Obesity exacerbates the age-related decline in physical function and causes frailty in older adults; however, the appropriate treatment for obese older adults is controversial. METHODS In this 1-year, randomized, controlled trial, we evaluated the independent and combined effects of weight loss and exercise in 107 adults who were 65 years of age or older and obese. Participants wer...
متن کاملWeight loss maintenance.
Successful long-term weight loss maintenance can be achieved by various means. A combination of dietary and physical activity interventions, along with one or more behavioral approaches, has proven successful in some persons, as documented by the National Weight Control Registry, but is limited by adherence to a consistent weight loss regimen. Successful approaches to weight loss maintenance in...
متن کاملCPAP, weight loss, or both for obstructive sleep apnea.
BACKGROUND Obesity and obstructive sleep apnea tend to coexist and are associated with inflammation, insulin resistance, dyslipidemia, and high blood pressure, but their causal relation to these abnormalities is unclear. METHODS We randomly assigned 181 patients with obesity, moderate-to-severe obstructive sleep apnea, and serum levels of C-reactive protein (CRP) greater than 1.0 mg per liter...
متن کاملInteractive computer-based interventions for weight loss or weight maintenance in overweight or obese people.
BACKGROUND The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that the number of obese or overweight individuals worldwide will increase to 1.5 billion by 2015. Chronic diseases associated with overweight or obesity include diabetes, heart disease, hypertension and stroke. OBJECTIVES To assess the effects of interactive computer-based interventions for weight loss or weight maintenance in overweig...
متن کاملWeight loss, weight maintenance, and adaptive thermogenesis.
BACKGROUND Diet-induced weight loss is accompanied by adaptive thermogenesis, ie, a disproportional or greater than expected reduction of resting metabolic rate (RMR). OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to investigate whether adaptive thermogenesis is sustained during weight maintenance after weight loss. DESIGN Subjects were 22 men and 69 women [mean ± SD age: 40 ± 9 y; body mass index (B...
